Today's Sermon Emphasis

Kevin & Tasha Being Called and Sent
Today we are focusing on the mission of the church. We welcome you this morning and invite you to share this theme with us. This morning will be a little unusual in that we will have the opportunity to highlight this purpose of the church.

Good news travels fast. And much faster than in biblical times. To be able to have the heart of a servant and make a difference in the lives of individuals who do not know the “Good News”—what an extraordinary opportunity!

This morning we get to hear about this opportunity. Listen to the calling and sending aspect of this good news. Listen to how God is working to bring this about. Listen for ways to be involved. Listen for ways to become a ministry partner.

This congregation is known for its heart for the love of Jesus being shown to others. I cannot think of a more challenging way to demonstrate this love! Come, let us learn together this morning.

In Christian love, Curtis

-----Ray's email explaining the mission----

Sunday, August 29, 2011, Kevin and Tasha Spann will present an update to the congregation regarding the status of their decision to join Mission Aviation Fellowship.  They have been selected to go to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in central Africa.  This country was previously known as the Belgian Congo and later Zaire.  It is distinguished from the "Republic of the Congo" which is east of the DR of the Congo.  The Belgian Congo is where the uranium ore for the US efforts to create the atomic bomb was mined in the late 1930's and early 1940's.

According to Wikipedia, it is a huge country with 71 million people, the eighteenth largest nation in the world and French speaking.

Mission Aviation Fellowship has a long history of serving missionaries through providing air transportation.  If you want to learn more about the history of this group you might want to watch this video: http://www.mafgiftshop.org/videos/beginnings.html

You will recall a strategic decision we made as a congregation several years ago to stop sending small amounts of money to many mission points and to concentrate more on fewer missionaries with whom we developed more personal relationships.  We have found that direction to be productive. We also have noted from our recent Summer Series where we invited professional care givers to speak to us that often we can do more through others than we can do ourselves.  This is the case with Kevin and Tasha…we have a personal relationship with them and we can do more through Mission Aviation Fellowship than we could ever do by ourselves.
